Cruising World Editor-At-Large, Author & Marine Journalist Gary "Cap’n Fatty" Goodlander has completed the re-power of his Wauquiez 43 "Ganesh". With the engineering assistance of Parts & Power, he removed his 30+ year old Perkins 4.154 and replaced it with a new Perkins Sabre M92B.
The M92B is a naturally aspirated 4.4 liter engine producing 86 hp at a modest 2400 RPM. He chose the ZF45-1 reduction gear for its cast iron ruggedness and reliability. During sea trials, he was able to achieve 6.5 knots at 1700 rpm, did 7 knots @ 2000 rpm and reached a maximum speed of 8 knots @ 2400 rpm. All of this was achieved with a noise level that is nearly half of their previous engine. The ZF 45-1 gear is velvet smooth and almost noiseless in the shifting process.
Cap’n Fatty and his wife Caroline are thrilled with the performance.
"We’re in bliss with our new M92B engine", Fatty recently emailed.
Preparing for their upcoming 3rd circumnavigation, they have increased
confidence in having a low speed, high torque, long-lived engine when
they need it.
Parts & Power would like to thank all the local BVI businesses that assisted with making this project such a success. BVI Yacht Charters, Tui Marine (the Moorings/Sunsail) & Village Cay Marina all assisted in making the installation go smoothly. Thanks also to the BVI Customs Department, and Comptroller of Customs Wade Smith, in making Cap’n Fatty and Caroline feel welcome.
Cap’n Fatty is author of "Chasing the Horizons" and eight other marine books, the most recent being "How to inexpensively and safely BUY, OUTFIT, & SAIL a Small Vessel Around the World". His next book "The Sea Gypsy Manifesto" is due for publication in early 2014. All of Cap’n Fatty’s books are available on Amazon.com.
